Comprehensive Lithium-ion Battery Fire Protection
Lithium-ion batteries are found in various modern electronic devices, such as laptops and mobile phones, as well as hybrid and electric vehicles due to their high energy density and reusability. However, they present unique fire hazards that differ significantly from traditional fire risks. A lithium-ion battery fire typically involves Class A, Class B, and Class C hazards and often occurs due to thermal runaway.
Thermal runaway propagation occurs when a lithium-ion battery cell overheats, causing a chain reaction that ignites adjacent cells. During this process, flammable gases and vapors are released, adding fuel to the fire – potentially creating a catastrophic incident. The NFPA recognizes over 15 years of independent scientific testing of Encapsulator Agents for the suppression of lithium-ion battery fires.
F-500 EA® Firefighting
How F-500 Encapsulator Agent Effectively
Halts Thermal Runaway Propagation
The hazards associated with a lithium-ion battery fire go beyond just flammability. F-500 EA® works to extinguish lithium battery fires on three distinct levels:
-
Flammability
-
Explosivity
-
Toxicity
This comprehensive approach to lithium-ion fire suppression prioritizes the health and safety of first responders and building occupants.

Flammability
An Encapsulator Agent is an efficient lithium-ion battery fire extinguisher. It encapsulates flammable liquid electrolytes and rapidly absorbs thermal energy from high-temperature flames. This successfully stops thermal runaway propagation and prevents further ignition of lithium-ion cells, providing long-term burnback resistance and minimizing the risk of re-ignition.
Explosivity
F-500 EA® effectively reduces the production of explosive off-gases emitted during a lithium-ion battery fire, such as Hydrogen (H2), Methane (CH4), and Ethylene (C2H4). This is especially important when using lithium-ion battery fire suppression systems within enclosed environments like apartments, data centers, aircraft engine compartments, electric car charging stations, energy storage systems, and more.

Toxicity
Encapsulator Agents reduce the concentration of toxic off-gases released during a lithium-ion battery fire, including Hydrogen Fluoride (HF), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This ensures safer conditions for firefighters and emergency responders, highlighting the importance of using appropriate safety measures and personal protective equipment.
